The Steps to Healing a Sick Body Part 2

I know that people believe that they can never have their house back once it is attacked by toxic mold but I think you can. I believe that after a proper remediation and proper steps towards making your house healthy you can find safety in your home once again. The steps we took included tearing down the offending area of the house and having it built again. We had our duct system cleaned and sprayed with foam. We added hepa-filters, ultraviolet machines, dehumidifiers on all of the systems in the house, and a positive pressure system added to the main level of the house. (I will add which company we recommend for the dehumidifier/positive pressure system in the future) The idea of the positive pressure system is to keep what is in the walls in the walls. After we fixed the house which took nearly 3 years after finding new places for mold growth in the home with think it is okay. We don’t seem to react to our house. We do however react to tons of other things because of our initial exposure we had to the mold/mycotoxins. We got very, very sick and our bodies have been permanently injured from this exposure. I think a lot of our reactions to our house developed from the mold’s mycotoxin exposure and then it made our bodies react to all kinds of other things including food that we never reacted to before.
My next Step to healing a sick body is seeing an environmental physician that deals with multiple chemical sensitivity, and other illnesses that are caused by exposure to toxic mold. I hope this will help some others people that just don’t know where to turn to for help. Step one and step two can be done concurrently and should be done that way. When we got sick it was like putting the pieces of a puzzle together. I will go deeper into this topic with treatment options that we have learned in my next blog.

The Steps to Healing a Sick Body Part 1
It is all about balance. Our body is incredible. Our body is always in a constant state of balance. If we sit back and close our eyes we can probably pick out an ache or a pain that is bothering us. If you pick out that pain and follow it for several days you will find out how the body is always trying to reach its equilibrium, its balance of health. Equilibrium is defined as a condition in which the net force acting on a particle is zero. Our body is always trying to restore balance. It works on every level including cellular and it is in that cellular level that my family and I are struggling to regain our health. Since 2003~2004 my body was in a constant state of sickness because of a toxic mold exposure that was not discovered until after my family fell ill. Since then, my family and I developed Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. It has been a constant struggle to return to a balanced healthy position. For my husband and me, we have to fight against the natural aging process of our bodies with a body that is in a constant state of inflammation. For our children, they are still growing and with their constant state of inflammation their body has to continually work on healing itself when it should be developing to its full potential.
Mycotoxin Toxin produced by a fungus. Numerous and varied, mycotoxins can cause hallucinations, skin inflammation, liver damage, hemorrhages, miscarriage, convulsions, neurological disturbances, and/or death in livestock and humans. The best-known mycotoxins are aflatoxin, ergot |
The number one thing that we did was to find out what was making us sick. This is the first job you have to do in order to even have a chance to get better. If you do everything else to help your body become healthy and you sit in a moldy home or work in a sick building you are NOT going to get better. These are not the only things that can make a person develop MCS but mold is where my journey started and it is the path that I am travelling on. It was really a process of elimination for us. We didn't know what was making us sick. It seemed to go from oldest to youngest. My husband lived in that house for the longest and he was also working on his music close to the source of the mold, although we didn't know it at the time. We tried to see what was going on with my husband and the symptoms he was experiencing. He went the normal route being checked by an Ears, Nose and Throat physician to see if he could have an inner ear infection because he was experiencing dizziness and loss of balance. His vision became blurred and he was having increased anxiety and brain fog. Brain fog may be described as a state of confusion or lack of clarity. It can feel like a cloud that reduces your visibility or clarity of mind. It can cause you to become forgetful, detached and often discouraged and depressed. All of his tests were within normal range. Within a couple of weeks, I started experiencing the same symptoms my husband was having but I was also 7-8 months pregnant at the time. I didn't know it then, I chalked my continual headache during this pregnancy as a headache that sometime happens when you are pregnant. I have had almost constant headaches for 4 ½ years now. Two weeks to a month later the rest of the kids developed various symptoms including fatigue and brain fog. We knew by then that something was very wrong in our home. Our home was what all of us had in common. Once we figured that it was something in our house, we had to discover what it was. It was like finding a needle in a haystack. I did some searching on the internet with some of our symptoms and discovered that we were probably being exposed to a toxic mold. It is the mycotoxins that the mold gives off that has its affect on the body. Not the mold itself. Look up mold from the CDC and you don't see much information on what it can do to your body. Look up various molds and find out what mycotoxin they give off and you are getting on the right track. It took us almost six months to track the mold to our newborn daughter's room. So what do we do after we find the problem? We get rid of it.
In my next blog writing, I will discuss how we made our house whole again. We went to war against mold to take back our home.

Inflammation: What to Eat to Reduce Your Risk of Many Diseases

Depression and Inflammation may go Hand-in-Hand
September 1 , 2006
People who are depressed are more likely to have exaggerated inflammatory responses to stressful situations, according to the results of a study released this week. Now, researchers want to know if that inflammation is behind the link between depression and heart disease ... or if it's the actual cause of depression.
Investigators from Emory University in Atlanta studied 28 otherwise healthy men. Half of the participants were diagnosed with major depression while the other half was depression-free. When faced with stressful situations, inflammatory markers in the blood rose in both the depressed men and the healthy controls, but levels were much higher in the men with major depression.
The depressed men in the study were more likely to have a history of early life stress as well, which could have contributed to the depression-inflammation link."While inflammation is essential for us to fight bacterial and viral infections, too much inflammation can cause harm," reports study author Andrew Miller, M.D. "There's always some collateral damage when the immune system gets fired up, and we now believe that too much inflammation, either at rest or during stress, may predispose people to become depressed or stay depressed."
The link between inflammation and depression could also help explain why people with depression are more likely to suffer from heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions that have been linked to an increased inflammatory response. Major depression is considered the leading cause of disability in countries all over the world. Costs associated with the condition in the United States come in at around $70 billion a year.

Inflammation
Inflammatory diseases afflict millions of people across the world leading to suffering, economic loss and premature death. As well as inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), other diseases include allergic rhinitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis.
Billions of dollars are being spent by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to identify and develop innovative therapeutics to treat such diseases. Over the last few years, despite intensive global research cures have still not been found.
Inflazyme has unique technology and products that we believe could be developed as novel therapies to treat a range of inflammatory diseases in particular those affecting the lungs such as asthma, COPD, allergic rhinitis and possibly cystic fibrosis. Clinical studies have shown that our drugs, called LSAIDs™ (leukocyte selective anti-inflammatory drugs), affect certain components of the inflammatory process leading to a reduction in the symptoms of inflammation and improvement in the patient’s quality of life.
What is inflammation?
Inflammation is part of the healthy body’s natural defense system. It is a process whereby the body's cells and natural chemicals protect us from physical damage and infection from foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are the body’s major infection-fighting cells. The primary objective of inflammation is to isolate, localize and eradicate foreign substances and repair damaged tissues.
Types of Inflammation - Acute and Chronic
Acute inflammation is short-lasting, from a few minutes to a few days, and it may be caused by physical damage, foreign substances, micro-organisms or other agents. Common examples of inflammation include sore throat or skin reactions such as a scratch, a burn, an insect bite. Viral infections can also give rise to acute inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is an inflammatory response lasting for several weeks, months or even years. It may arise as a result of acute inflammation and often the two co-exist. The exact nature, extent and duration of chronic inflammation is highly variable, and it frequently depends on a balance between the agent causing the inflammation and the attempts of the body to remove it. Examples of chronic inflammation include COPD, tuberculosis, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and Chrohn’s disease.
What are some of the symptoms of inflammation?
Irrespective of whether the inflammation is acute or chronic, the range of symptoms is usually the same:
Redness
Warming and swelling of affected tissues
Fever
Pain
Other symptoms may include the following, but only one or two are experienced at the same time:
Fever
Chills
Fatigue/loss of energy
Headaches
Loss of appetite
Muscle stiffness
Joint pain, stiffness or loss of function
The inflammatory response consists of changes in blood flow, increased permeability of blood vessels and escape of cells from the blood into the tissues. The changes are essentially the same whatever the cause and wherever the site.
What causes the symptoms of inflammation?
Tissue damage or detection of a foreign substance triggers white blood cells to release chemicals into the blood or affected tissues thus initiating the inflammatory process. The release of these chemicals increases the blood flow to the area of injury or infection and may result in redness and warmth. This increased blood flow allows for additional white blood cells to be recruited to the area of inflammation, which in turn release more chemicals, recruiting more white blood cells, and so on, and so on.
Some of these chemicals also initiate a process in which the white blood cells and fluid are transported out of the blood stream to the site of inflammation. This movement of cells and fluid from the bloodstream into the surrounding tissues usually results in swelling and this protective process may also stimulate the nerves causing pain.
In a healthy individual, when the infection has been cleared or the tissue damage has been healed, the inflammation process stops, and the body returns to its normal state.
In some people, however, the body's immune system attacks itself by mistake. These conditions, called autoimmune disorders, lead to a state where the inflammatory response remains “turned on” resulting in potentially significant damage to the body’s tissues.
Asthma
In the case of asthma, persistent inflammation exists in a sufferer’s lungs. The ongoing inflammation leads to increased sensitivity of the lung tissue. The airways become unusually sensitive to external stimuli, such as changes in temperature and environmental factors (animal dander, pollen, etc.). This increased sensitivity may lead to an asthma attack where the tightening of the airways in the lungs makes something as simple as breathing difficult. In very severe cases, breathing is impossible without immediate medical intervention.
Our LSAIDs™ therapeutics have shown anti-inflammatory effects in clinical studies in people suffering from asthma. We believe their mode of action is related to blocking key aspects of the inflammation cascade, specifically blocking a component of the leukocyte adhesion cascade shown in Figure 1. Moreover, we have observed that the LSAIDs™ appear to preferentially accumulate in lung tissues. Hence, our research and development efforts are directed towards inflammatory diseases of the lung such as asthma, COPD and allergic rhinitis.
A Molecular Glance at Inflammation – the Leukocyte Adhesion Cascade
This cascade involves a very specific sequence of events that takes place at the molecular level of the inflammatory response irrespective of whether a person is suffering from acute or chronic inflammation. The process involves the recruitment of leukocytes to the sites of inflammation. The diagram below shows the steps involved. We believe the LSAIDs™ have their effect within this cascade by inhibiting part of this process, resulting in a reduction in the number of leukocytes migrating into the surrounding tissues, and thus reducing the unwanted inflammation.
The Leukocyte Adhesion Cascade

Endothelium: The endothelium is a thin layer of flat cells located at the interface between the blood and the vessel wall. These cells are in close contact and form a slick layer preventing the interaction of blood cells with the vessel wall.
Activation: An infection, or some sort of tissue damage, triggers the release of compounds leukocytes to move into tissue towards the foreign invader.
Margination: The process in which free-flowing leukocytes exit the central blood stream, and initiate leukocyte and endothelial cell interactions by close mechanical contact.
Rolling: Once leukocytes are in contact with the endothelium, they may transiently adhere to cellular components on the endothelium and begin to roll.
Adhesion: As the rolling rate slows, the components on the outside of the leukocyte may bind to adhesion molecules on the endothelium, causing the leukocyte to adhere tightly to the endothelium.
Transmigration: This is the migration of the adhered leukocyte between adjacent endothelial cells to the underlying tissue.

Key concepts: inflammation, omega-3 and turmeric
NaturalNews) Inflammation is a double-edged sword. While it is very critical for the healing of wounds, it is also a bodily response that can become too much of a good thing. Any infection, injury or toxicity problem inflicted on our bodies is handled by the inflammatory response that occurs automatically. Unfortunately, if certain substances in our bodies become unbalanced, the inflammation switch can come "on" at the wrong time or forget to go "off" when no longer needed.
When inflammation occurs, it can be seen externally as a rash or swelling. A more dangerous kind is that which occurs internally. If it goes on too long it can cause damage to any organ or organ system. People with auto-immune and chronic inflammatory diseases are very familiar with the problems inflammation can cause.
Diseases in which inflammation plays a role are heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's, cancers, arthritis, gingivitis and other "itis" disorders.
On the positive side, since the growth in such diseases can be correlated with and related to our increased diets of fast, convenient foods, it is possible to end the inflammation process with a change in diet.
Not only do we need to eliminate saturated and trans-fats, refined sugars, starches, commercial meats and artificial sweeteners, but we can reverse problems of chronic inflammatory diseases by choosing certain foods and herbs available at the grocery store.
It is being shown time and again that the common therapy for inflammation – pharmaceuticals - has been a miserable and costly failure. Rather than submit your body to the side effects of such drugs, please consider the much healthier alternatives discussed below.
Dietary polyphenols, found in many edible plants, are being found to have anti-inflammatory properties. Studies on animals in the lab have demonstrated such properties, and studies done on different human populations have shown that those who consume polyphenol-rich foods have lower incidences of inflammatory disease.
Fruits rich in this phytochemical include blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, sour
cherries, pomegranates and cranberries. If you drink these in juices, make sure to read the label and avoid any with sugar added.
Another group of dietary nutrients receiving much publicity today are the omega fatty acids. Don't be
confused by the wording here. Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, while omega-6 acids can actually help cause inflammation. That is why we need to balance the use of omega-6's with omega-3's. If your diet has been predominantly rich in the omega-6 oils, you will have to do more than achieve a balance by increasing omega-3's and drastically reducing the omega-6's.
Other foods rich in omega-3's include oily fish such as herring, sardines, tuna, mackerel and salmon
(preferably wild); oils made from these fish; hemp, flax, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and their oils; high-fiber, non-starchy vegetables such as dark leafy salad greens, spinach, kale, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, and onions.
We often overlook the turnip, but from a Chinese medicinal view, it and the radish both aid digestion by cooling and soothing inflammation and phlegm.
Quercetin is a flavonoid, and a very powerful one. It is found in red grapes, red and yellow onions, garlic, broccoli and apples.
Anti-oxidant properties in some foods also help fight inflammation by protecting the body from free radicals. Vitamin C-rich foods fall into this category, including carrots, orange winter squash, bell peppers and tomatoes.
To reduce swelling and inflammation quickly, eat half of a fresh pineapple or papaya daily. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain and papaya contains papain. Pain and swelling should go down in two to six days.
Eating at least five servings of such fresh fruits and vegetables daily is a minimum. If inflammation is a problem, it is recommended to increase the intake of this food group. In fact, some natural health experts advise a diet that is 75% raw foods.
The flavorings and herbs used in cooking your lean meats and fish are very important as well in fighting inflammation. Turmeric, and its yellowing substance curcumin, are most commonly found in Indian foods like curry and in mustards. The author makes capsules of grocery store-bought turmeric, which has helped with arthritis symptoms. At least one naturopath has stated it works much like anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals, without the side effects.
Ginger is another flavoring that has many healthful properties, one of which is an anti-inflammatory.
Garlic has been the object of much research and has been shown to inhibit the growth of 23 organisms,
including bacteria, mold and yeast. It is also very helpful as an anti-inflammatory.
Remember, while adding spices like turmeric, it is just as important to decrease, if not eliminate,
flavorings such as salt, sugar and artificial sweeteners. Also avoid colas, white flour products and junk foods.
Just one precaution: Herbs and spices should be used with medical supervision if one is also taking
medications because their medicinal properties can interfere with the drugs.
When it comes to soy and soy products, the advice and research findings are contradictory. More research is needed on these foods.
In conclusion, if you want to reduce inflammation, eat healthier. Replace your processed foods with meals like cold water fish, chicken, salads, and steamed vegetables. Avoid deep-fried foods and hydrogenated oils. Bake or stir-fry instead of frying. Use olive oil, an omega-9 fatty acid, instead of corn and related oils.

The Addictive Allergy

The addictive allergy:
This concept is based on the ideas of Theron Randolph, MD. Dr. Randolph looked at allergies in an entirely new way. Here are some of his ideas.
· A person can take up to 72 hours to react to an offending food.
· Food allergies can cause symptoms of chronic conditions and seem to have nothing to do with consuming the offending food. Symptoms like migraine headaches, sinusitis, eczema, digestive problems, asthma, and obesity are examples of the problems caused by hidden food allergies.
· People with food allergies are commonly addicted to the food that is causing their health problem.
· Commonly, when the offending food is avoided, the individual's symptoms become worse initially. Symptoms usually flare up for 4 or 5 days, but this reaction can last longer. After the reaction passes the individual will feel much better—chronic symptoms disappear, energy increases and excess weight begins to come off.
Finding hidden allergies:
Dr. Arthur Coca was a doctor who developed a way for finding allergies by using the pulse. He completed his work over 40 years ago.
Coca Pulse Test Procedure:
1. Establish your baseline pulse by counting your pulse for a full minute before trying a particular food.
2. Put a food in your mouth (on your tongue). Do not swallow it. Taste it for at least 1 minute.
3. Retake your pulse while the food remains in your mouth. Take the pulse for a full minute. A change of four or more is considered a sensitive reaction. The greater the degree of allergenicity, the higher the pulse will be.
4. Spit out the tested ingredient (do not swallow it). Rinse your mouth and retake your pulse. When it returns to baseline, you can test another food.
This test may not be valid if you are taking a drug that controls your heart rate, such as a calcium-channel blocker or beta-blocker.
Rules for pulse testing:
· Because accuracy is important, you must always take your pulse for 1 full minute.
· If your pulse count when standing is greater than that when sitting, this is a positive indication of food or environmental sensitivity.
· If at least 14 pulse counts are being taken each day, and if your daily maximal pulse rate is constant (within one or two beats) for three days in succession, this indicates that all food sensitivities have been avoided on those days.
· If the ingestion of a frequently eaten food causes no acceleration of your pulse (at least six beats above your estimated normal maximum) that food can be tentatively considered nonsensitive for you.
· Your pulse reaction to an inhaled allergen (particularly dust mites) is more likely to be of shorter duration than that to a major food allergen.
· Pulse rates that are not more than six beats above the estimated normal daily maximum should not be blamed on a recently eat food but on an inhalant or recurrent reaction.
· If your minimum pulse rate does not regularly occur before rising, after the night's rest, but at some other time in the day, this usually indicates sensitivity to dust, dust mites or something in the sleeping environment.
